Hey Steve,

I've been listening to this piece a lot lately. I never fully appreciated it until recently. It's bad as...um...heck!

Anyway, I just throught I'd throw that out there...

Matt

Hey guys, no need to fight - there's plenty of Monkey to go around... Smile

Seriously, thanks - that piece gets overlooked (I'm guessing) because of the silly title and program, and how insanely difficult it is.

Did you know it was born out of a joke I made right after a bunch of us went to hear Godzilla Eats Las Vegas for the first time at Rutgers? I said to Eric, while standing on the train platform waiting to go back to New York, "I'm going to write a piece called Monkey and it'll start like this" and then I sang the first bar (picture me shrieking like a monkey and jumping around the train platform).

I was just kidding at the time. I should be careful what I joke about.

Anyway, coincidentally, I just found old sketches for the piece a couple of days ago, including a written-out, prose description of what happens in the piece - a sort of "blow by blow." I think I packed it away, but if I come across it again, maybe I'll scan it in and post it. I (re)discovered that I'd originally planned to open the piece with a jungle ambience, birds chirping, trees rustling, odd animals in the distance...and then the monkeys erupt onto the scene. Not sure why I cut it, but it was interesting to find that - I'd completely forgotten about it.

I also quote Godzilla in there as well...see if you can spot it. It's pretty obvious...

Sorry for the self-indulgence here - was just a funny coincidence to find that right when you posted this.

Dude, get out of my brain!! Also, where did I put my keys?

So, I posted those sketches on my blog, and a thread about it here, in case anyone is interested.

They're on the front table underneath the mail and the latest Musician's Friend catalog sitting there.
